Event description

Description

CEN are hosting a Free One Advocacy Training on School Exclusions

Since 1999, Communities Empowerment Network (CEN) has worked and campaigned for Equality and Justice in Education.

CEN are the only organisation in London that are specifically funded to provide Free Independent Expert Advice, Support, and Representation to parents and carers of children who are at risk of exclusion or have been excluded.

Saturday 30th September 2017 is the latest of Free Introductory Education Advocacy Training Sessions CEN has delivered this year. Please do not book on if you have attended before unless you need to review.

IMPORTANT: For past attendees, the content is roughly the same as the previous Advocacy Training days CEN have held over the past year or so. We have added some extra material relating to prevention and early intervention

Who should attend?

  • Parents who want to gain the essential skills and knowledge to empower themselves and other parents that have children at risk of school exclusion or who have been excluded.
  • Community members and practitioners who would like to develop their understanding of Advocacy and School Exclusions.
  • And for anyone who would be interested in becoming a CEN VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE for Communities Empowerment Network and helping us meet the huge demand for our services

What will I get out of the workshop?

  • Understand the parent’s and child’s perspective
  • Understand the school environment and types of exclusion that schools enforce
  • Identify when children are more likely to be at risk at of exclusion and the strategies to put in place to avoid Exclusion
  • Increase your knowledge about the legal aspects of exclusion.
  • Understand the importance of recording information and how to ask critical questions to prepare an effective case.
  • Opportunity to become a CEN Volunteer Advocate or Empowerment Volunteer.

We have a huge demand for our training and due to limited funding we are only able to hold a few of these workshops each year.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There is free parking around the local area.

It is also 4 minute walk from Loughborough Junction station or a 10 minute brisk walk from Brixton station.

A number of buses go from outside Brixton station - you have to cross to the other side of the road from Brixton tube. You can takebuses 35, 345 45 or P4). It takes 5 minutes and you need to get out at the Shakespeare Road stop on Coldharbour Lane.

The Shakespeare Business Centre's entrance is on Shakespeare Road - here it intersects with Coldharbour Lane. You will see a railway bridge going over the road if you are coming from Brixton - the business centre is right by it. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=sw9+8rr&ie=UTF-8

When you enter the courtyard of the business centre, walk to the far right hand end corner (West Wing) and enter the purple doors and come up to the first floor where you will find our office.

Do CEN provide lunch?

CEN only provide refreshments through out the day (tea, biscuits, fruit etc). Participants often bring their lunch or visit the Tesco's across the road or the local shops / cafe's.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please feel free to contact Joan on 0207 733 0297 or joan@cenlive.org

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

We would like you to ensure there is the correct name on each ticket as we are funded to provide this training it is important we maintain accurate logs of who attended.
