queer/disrupt are pleased to be in conversation with Professor zethu Matebeni to discuss queer art as a necessary form of activism in university spaces.

We will be having a 30-minute conversation with Professor Matebeni, followed by a Q&A session for the audience to ask questions from the discussion or from her work.

zethu Matebeni is a sociologist, activist and writer whose research focuses on African Queer Theory, Sexualities and Gender. She has edited and co-edited various volumes on African LGBTIQ life including Reclaiming African: queer perspectives on sexual and gender identities (Modjaji books, 2014); Queer in Africa: LGBTQI Identities, Citizenship and Activism (Routledge, 2018); and Beyond the Mountain: queer life in 'Africa's gay capital' (UNISA Press, 2019). Her work appears in numerous academic journals, books and blogs. She is a visiting professor at the Centre for Women and Gender Studies, Nelson Mandela University. zethu holds the South African Research Chair in Sexualities, Gender and Queer Studies, University of Fort Hare.
