Description

Developing the Northern Ireland Plant Health Risk Register: Risk Based Biosecurity

The recent appearance of a number of high profile plant diseases (e.g. ash dieback, larch decline) has demonstrated the damaging impact of non-native pests and diseases on Northern Ireland’s natural environment and rural economy. With hundreds of potentially damaging plant pests and diseases threatening European agriculture, forestry and horticulture, AFBI and DAERA have been developing the Northern Ireland Plant Health Risk Register which identifies the most serious threats to Northern Ireland’s industry and wider environment.

The risk register is an evidence based tool and uses information on biology and potential impact to prioritise plant pests and diseases, allowing finite biosecurity resources to be focused on the key threats.

The risk register is a resource for regulators, the DAERA plant health inspectorate, the local plant based industries. AFBI have also carried out the first extensive local public survey on the awareness of plant health risks to Northern Ireland. This information and a range of new scientific methods are being used to develop a more effective risk based approach to maintaining Northern Ireland plant health and biosecurity.
