#AfterWhitchurch: Reflections on the Changing System of Mental Health Care
Whitchurch Hospital opened as the Cardiff City Mental Hospital in 1908, the hospital's last inpatients moving to new purpose-built facilities at Hafan y Coed at the Llandough Hospital site in the Vale of Glamorgan in April 2016. The closure of Whitchurch is our backdrop for this evening event on the changing shape of mental health care. Members of the Whitchurch Hospital Historical Society will display extracts from the written archives, images and objects. Elaine Paton will share images and recordings from her work as Artistic Director of 'Moment(o)s of Leaving', which marked the occasion of the hospital's closure through performance, pictures and sound. Cardiff University researchers from the School of Healthcare Sciences and the School of Medicine will talk about modern mental health services, care and treatments. Service user researchers will share their tales from the field. Participants will have opportunities to listen, read and touch, and to ask questions.
