Event description

Description

Join us for a series of screenings exploring the legacy of Frankenstein in cinema. All screenings introduced by Dr Sarah Artt and Dr Emily Alder (Edinburgh Napier University) and followed by post-screening discussion. This is a an opportunity to reflect on Frankenstein's screen presence, ahead of the Frankenstein's publication bicentenary year in 2018 and the release of two (!) Mary Shelley biopics: Mary Shelley (Haifa Al-Mansoor, 2017) and Mary Shelley's Monster. (Coky Giedroyc, release date TBC). The first screening will be Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks, 1978) From the master of spoof, this is an engagingly silly take on James Whale's iconic 1931 film. Certificate PG. The second screening takes us to one of the most sinister appropriations of the Frankenstein story: Eyes Without a Face/Les Yeux Sans Visage (Georges Franju 1959) Edith Scob turns in a bewitching performances as a tragic, female 'creature'. Certificate 15. The final screening brings us to the contemporary moment with La piel que habito/The Skin I Live In (Pedro Almodovar 2011) a provocative and controversial film that echoes the themes of Frankenstein, as well as being openly influenced by Eyes Without a Face. Certificate 15. Please join us for our follow-on event (also free!) on Tuesday 23 May at the National Library of Scotland: Moving Creatures: Frankenstein on Screen, Join Dr Sarah Artt and Dr Emily Alder (Edinburgh Napier), along with Dr. Benjamin Poore (University of York) and Dr. Sorcha Ní Fhlainn(Manchester Metropolitan) for talks and audience discussion of various film iterations of the Creature.
