Age Proud - I am Still Here, BSL & CAPTIONS
Event Information
About this Event
Age Proud Leeds is a campaign to raise awareness of ageism and change negative attitudes about ageing and older people.
Age Proud Leeds offers this workshop to bring together disabled people to talk about getting older and dealing with discrimination and ageism on Zoom. Ageism is discrimination and being treated unfairly because of your age.
- How can we get ready for becoming older?
- Do we have to deal with more barriers and discrimination because we are older?
- Some older disabled people say that they have noticed that other people think they are disabled because they are older. They don’t realise that they have been disabled for all or most of their lives.
The disabled person can feel as if people don’t see this part of them anymore - it has become invisible.
Does this change the way you think about yourself? Do you think it is important that people know that you have been disabled for all or most of your life? Is this part of being proud and positive about being a disabled person?
- How can we make services better for older disabled people?
- Many people want to work together to deal with ageism and all the other kinds of discrimination which affect disabled people, what can they do to help?
For: This Zoom workshop is for disabled people only and will be led by disabled people. It is open to people who have been disabled for all or part of their lives, and older people who have become disabled. It is for everyone whatever kind of impairment (or disability) you have, it could be physical, sensory, learning disability, being on the autistic spectrum or neurodiverse, mental health or any other health condition. It is for people who self define as a disabled person, this means they have decided for themselves that they are disabled because they have to deal with discrimination and barriers.
We want disabled people of any age to join in because talking about getting older is good for everyone. Also, many disabled people want to help make things better for older disabled people.
