AGM & talk - Could wildcats make a return to South West England?
Overview
Could the native European wildcat Felis silvestris make a return to South West England?
European wildcat (once known as woodcat in England) is the last extant native cat in Great Britain. Once widespread across England, as with many of our predators, they were relentlessly persecuted for centuries. By the mid-1800s they had largely been exterminated from England & Wales. They made their last stand in Scotland but even here their fate is on a knife edge. If we are not to lose this intriguing species, drastic conservation action is needed.
With changing attitudes and increased understanding on the role predators play in restoring our damaged ecosystems, could now be the time to bring back the woodcat? Hear about the results of the Devon Wildlife Trust led feasibility work and learn more about this fascinating native species.
The AGM will start at 7.00pm, with refreshments beforehand, followed by the talk.
