Event description
Gardening Workshops in the Community Garden

About this event

We invite you to join us in the community garden at Agnes Riley Gardens for a series of six gardening workshops, after which you will have all the knowledge you need to grow healthy plants producing organic vegetables and flowers. The workshops are open to everybody - both our current volunteers and new visitors, and take place on Monday evenings in May and June 2021, from 5pm to 7pm.

On each day we will be covering a gardening topic (listed below) and learning about the theory and science behind it, while also working to make improvements to the community garden and to populate it with plants for the 2021 growing season.

The first two sessions take place in May, and then there is a two-week break while restoration works are carried out in the garden. We invite participants on the workshops to put forward suggestions as to what works you would like to see carried out, and we will hold a brainstorming session about this at the first workshop on May 10th.

We are asking those attending to sign up for a free space by booking an Eventbrite ticket - this is to ensure we can keep numbers low in order to abide by social distancing rules. Don't worry if you are unable to attend on one or two of the dates, you are still welcome to sign up.

The six week course is outlined as follows:

Monday 10th May - Propagation 1

We will take some time to consider the upcoming restoration works in the community garden and as a group we will brainstorm what improvements can be made in the garden during these works. We will begin sowing a number of vegetable and flower seeds to populate the new growing spaces. We will also look at methods of taking cuttings from plants.

  • Seed sowing – methods for large and small seeds
  • Understanding germination requirements for seeds
  • Taking cuttings – hardwood and softwood examples

Monday 17th May - Propagation 2

We will continue sowing seeds and taking cuttings from existing plants in the garden, and will also look at how and when to prick out and pot on seedlings.

  • Pricking out seedlings
  • Potting on young plants
  • Use of different pots and seed trays

Monday 7th June - Growing Media

Restoration works to the garden are now complete, so for this session we will be learning about soil improvement methods and we will incorporate organic matter into the existing and new raised beds.

  • What is soil, compost, mulch
  • Understanding soil pH and minerals
  • Soil cultivation methods – single and double digging; the no-dig system

Monday 14th June - Protective Environments

With the polytunnel cover now repaired, we will work as a group to organise and layout both the tunnel and the greenhouse. We will begin planting out vegetables that we sowed in week one, planting them into the ground inside the polytunnel, while learning how to make use of the protective environments to extend our growing season.

  • Examples of environments and their uses – polytunnel, cloches, etc
  • Environments for pest protection – netting, plastic tunnels, etc.
  • Construction of environments at home for cheap

Monday 21st June - Pests and Diseases

While learning about common pest problems in the vegetable garden, we will construct pest-prevention frames to fit netting around the raised beds in the community garden.

  • Examples of common pests and diseases in the vegetable garden
  • Simple prevention materials for common diseases
  • The difference between fungal and viral diseases

Monday 28th June - Organic Methods

For our final session, we will learn about a number of organic gardening techniques that can be used in the vegetable garden, and we will make organic fertiliser using weeds.

  • Organic pest control including attracting beneficial wildlife
  • Use of companion planting
  • Crop rotation methods
