Overview

A debate on Zoom about how generative AI has changed the world of media - three years after the launch of Chat GPT.

Event Description

In October 2023, we held a fascinating online discussion about the newly launched ChatGPT- asking whether generative AI was a friend or foe. Well, November 2025 is the third anniversary of the launch of ChatGPT, a good time to hold a follow-up discussion on how AI is changing the media industry – fundamentally and forever.

Generative AI has now become a significant feature of the media world. Many of us use it in our work and daily lives, in one way or another. AI has made media organisations rethink their future strategy and work systems. There are an increasing number of high-profile legal battles over AI-related copyright issues. And we are now seeing AI-generated TV presenters.

In 2023, we asked: “Will AI help media folk to become more creative, freeing them up from mundane tasks, and allowing them to extend their production and editorial horizons? Or will it replace jobs, promote tired formats and stereotypes, increase misinformation, and undermine copyright?”

Here we are in 2025, and AI has moved from being a question mark into a reality.

So, the Media Society is holding an important panel discussion: AI and the Media: Part 2.

Our expert panel includes:

  • Geeta Guru-Murthy (Chair) - BBC TV news presenter, and now doing a Masters on AI Ethics at Cambridge.
  • Rhiannon Williams - MIT Technology Review reporter, with a special interest in AI and robotics. Writes the award-winning The Download newsletter.
  • Ed Zitron - a PR expert, author and tech critic. Wired recently profiled him, calling him 'one of the loudest voices of the AI haters'.
  • Graham Lovelace - editor of the highly successful global 'Charting Gen AI' Substack newsletter.
  • Nick Parnes - CEO of the TV production company that produced the recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme 'Will AI Take My Job', featuring an AI presenter.

The event will be introduced by the Media Society President Nigel Dacre.
