In partnership with the Alan Turing Institute and Queen Mary’s University, the Institute for the Future of Work is convening a roundtable to understand how automation is changing work in the creative industries.

As we consider what regulation and governance are needed – especially as the UK government looks to host its Global AI Safety Summit 1-2 November, we are looking to hear from those with first-hand perspectives on the experience of changes to work arising from the adoption of new technologies.

This might include how creative practices are being impacted by generative AI technologies like DALL-E or ChatGPT. Beyond that though, research suggests that the most common fears about potential job losses due to the introduction of AI in creative work overlook a wider range of potential impacts such as dignity of work, as well as pay and contract terms. The issues under dispute in the current script-writers' strike in Hollywood demonstrate that the risks and impacts of automation are more complicated than just job losses.

At this roundtable, we will seek to understand how automation is changing work in the creative industries. Our goal is to ensure that your experience informs current debates about how to regulate AI, with a view to supporting workers within and beyond the creative industries. We are therefore interested in speaking to workers drawn from the full range of occupations within the creative sector, in addition to those who identify as ‘creatives’ or artists.
