About this event
Please join us for the latest in our AI in Healthcare seminars when Dr Darren Lunn will be discussing his work:
A discussion on synthetic data by Dr Darren Lunn, head of Health Data Science at the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)
Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) is a real-world research service supporting retrospective and prospective public health and clinical studies. CPRD research data services are delivered by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) with support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), as part of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). CPRD collects anonymised patient data from a network of GP practices across the UK. Primary care data are linked to a range of other health related data to provide a longitudinal, representative UK population health dataset. The data encompass 65 million patients, including 19 million currently registered patients.
CPRD have developed methods to generate high-fidelity synthetic (artificial) data that is indistinguishable from real patient data. This synthetic data can be used to validate artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that are trained using real data and vice versa. High-fidelity synthetic data can also be used to augment real data in clinical trials involving rare diseases and generate completely artificial control patient populations in scenarios where it would be unethical to withhold potentially lifesaving treatment from trial participants. This talk will provide an overview of the apporach CPRD has taken to generating synthetic data, as well as give an outline of further development and potential future applications.
Bio:
Darren Lunn is the Head of Health Data Science at the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), which is a UK government real world data research service. Since 2018 he has been leading the development of key technology platforms including the development of CPRD Safe, CPRD’s trusted research environment that is currently used by researchers across the globe; the development of CPRD Emulate that is scaling up CPRD’s synthetic data generation proof of concept into a commercially viable product; and the development of CPRD’s data collection and processing platforms that curate primary care and linked datasets from sources across the UK to produce CPRD’s high quality, regulatory grade, research assets such as CPRD Arum and CPRD Gold.
The talk will be held in person, in the Emmeline Suite at the Christabel Pankhurst Instituate at the University of Manchester, and also via a Teams link (sent out with the meeting details):
