Can Artificial Intelligence help save the planet — or accelerate its decline?
As AI systems become more powerful, they also become more energy-intensive. Training large models now consumes as much electricity as some small nations. At the same time, AI is being hailed as a key tool in optimizing renewable energy, monitoring biodiversity, and informing ecological decision-making.This panel discussion will explore both the promise and the peril of AI’s environmental footprint. From the carbon cost of massive computing infrastructure to the hidden impact of rare earth extraction, we’ll examine whether “green AI” is a genuine shift or just another layer of branding. We’ll ask whether AI can truly accelerate the transition to renewable energy, or if it is simply shifting the burden elsewhere? - and we’ll address how these technologies intersect with issues of justice, power, and planetary stewardship.
