This interactive workshop invites counsellors and psychotherapists to explore the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in therapeutic practice. The session will focus on ethical, legal, relational, and professional considerations surrounding AI, including how it may reshape client safety, confidentiality, and professional identity.

Participants will gain an understanding of key AI concepts such as machine learning, large language models (LLMs), and AI-assisted therapeutic tools, while reflecting on their implications for practice. Through experiential exercises, simulated AI interactions, and reflective discussion, attendees will examine how AI may influence therapeutic presence, empathy, and relational depth, and identify practical, ethical, and creative ways to integrate AI into clinical development, supervision, and professional growth.

By the end of this CPD session, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on the emerging role of AI in therapeutic practice and its ethical, relational, legal, and professional implications.
  • Develop awareness of key AI concepts and their potential impact on clinical work.

Facilitator Biography


Claire Clancey, PGCertHE, MBACP, is a Senior Lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy and an integrative humanistic therapist. She also serves as an External Examiner for counselling programmes validated by Sheffield Hallam University.

At the Metanoia Institute, Claire teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She is committed to fostering ethical, reflective, and inclusive teaching and therapeutic practice, with a particular focus on the relationship between artificial intelligence, ethics, and counselling. Her current work supports practitioners to engage with emerging technologies with critical awareness and professional responsibility.
