AIA UK Building Tour - Newport Street Gallery
Thu 18 May 2017, 18:30 – 20:30 BST
Newport Street Gallery is the realisation of Damien Hirst’s long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. Caruso St John Architects and Max Fordham LLP worked withHirst, one of Britain’s most famous artists, to deliver his flagship gallery in Vauxhall, London. It was the winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2016.
Consisting of both new-build and listed refurbished blocks, the gallery lies unassumingly across from elevated railway arches. The building includes contemporary art galleries, a viewing room, offices, workshops, a restaurant and ancillary technical areas. The site is adjacent to an extremely busy elevated railway, therefore the acoustic design included significant sound insulation to the main spaces, proving an important feature to the relatively isolated and quiet ambience desired for the galleries. With sculptures as heavy as 40 tonnes installed, scale was a vital consideration in the brief. The result is a gallery that is subtle, innovative, and harmonious.
Architects from Caruso St John and engineers from Max Fordham LLP will lead the tour and explain how they worked together to incorporate the services into the architecture.
