About this event

AiMH UK Conference Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 2022

Recognising & Responding to Trauma in Infants

9:15 Keynote: Jane Barlow

Unresolved Trauma in the Parent & Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma

Jane will describe the impact of unresolved trauma in the parent on infant mental health and how this can lead to intergenerational transmission of trauma. Jane will present the evidence for dyadic models of working with parents and infants that can interrupt the cycle of trauma.

9:45 – 11:15 Video Presentations & Case Discussion: Dana Shai & Rose Spence

Recognising Trauma in Infants and in the Parent-Infant Relationship

Dana & Rose will demonstrate through video how we can recognise trauma in infants, by looking at the infant’s body language and at the non-verbal communications between parents and infants. Participants will leave with enhanced skill in recognising when an infant is at suffering and identifying the aspects of the parent infant relationship which need support or safeguarding.

11:15 - 11:30 Break

11:30 – 12:15 Case Presentation & Discussion: Carol Levine

Working with the Parent-Infant Relationship when the Parent has Experienced Severe Past Trauma

Carol will describe work with a deeply traumatised parent who was unable to look at or relate to her baby. Despite the challenges inherent in cases such as this, participants will learn how sensitive therapeutic work with the parent can have a corresponding effect on the parent’s capacity to respond to their infant’s needs.

12:15 – 13:00 Case Presentation & Discussion: Jane Clark

Working with Infants who have Experienced Trauma

Jane will describe different ways of working therapeutically with infants who have experienced trauma. These approaches have at their heart a trauma-informed, attachment-based and baby-led approach to supporting infant mental health. Jane will also demonstrate the potential of play and playfulness for bringing traumatised infants into relationship.

13:00 – 13:30 Closing Talk: Clare Hooper

Beyond Trauma: Emotional Regulation Skills for Parents of Infants

One of the key impacts of trauma in the parent or relational trauma in the infant is on the ability to regulate emotions. Clare is a Baby Sensory practitioner as well as a Perinatal Occupational Therapist. She will share with us practical skills for helping parents and infants calm their emotional regulatory system.
