Description

Dear Postgraduate Researchers,

The Westmere Scholars would like to introduce the fourth workshop entitled 'Air Quality and Health' in this year's Westmere's inaugural Well-being Seminar Series. Forward-thinking and innovative researchers from the University of Birmingham are avidly researching and looking for practical applications for all of us now living in an increasingly high-paced and fast-changing environment.

For the penultimate workshop on 'Air Quality and Health', Professor Rob MacKenzie, the Director of the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research and Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Birmingham will be leading an interactive workshop exploring the effects of the implications of air quality upon health and some forestry strategies to tackle this. He is concerned with forestry strategies to combat air pollution. Practical tips shall be offered from Rob during this open interactive workshop.

Rob is developing a broader understanding of urban systems and their resilience, particularly urban green infrastructure, as discussed in an informal essay featured on the Institute of Advanced Studies' Saving Humans website.

The workshop will cover the following:

Aims:

  • Communicate the importance of air quality
  • Communicate the components/aspects of air quality
  • Illustrate the effects of poor air quality upon health and/or wellbeing or ecosystems
  • Give practical tips for reducing the exposure to poor air quality
  • Provide direction and guidance on how we can individually and collectively improve the air quality around us?

The first half of the workshop shall have Rob share some of the effects of air pollution on health and he shall then consider forestry science and its approaches to combatting air pollution. The second half will be an interactive and open session where all participants can freely engage bringing their own questions and ideas to the fora.

We would love to welcome you to this practical and interactive workshop. Lunch will be provided (incl. vegetarian and vegan options).
