Akhuwat UK Trust Flood Relief Fundraiser – Birmingham 2025
Akhuwat was founded in Pakistan in 2001 by Dr. Amjad Saqib and friends in accordance with the Islamic principle of 'Mawakhat' meaning creating brotherhood between 'Haves' and 'Have Nots'. Akhuwat believes in a poverty-free society based on the principles of compassion and equity. Akhuwat works to reduce poverty through 100% interest-free microloans, capacity building, and social guidance. Akhuwat was founded with a meagre sum of US $100 and today has expanded to include over 750 branches in 350 cities of Pakistan while distributing over 1 Billion U$D to more than 6.5 million underpriviliged beneficiaries in Pakistan. Akhuwat model became a Harvard University case study and is taught at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE and many other institutions. https://case.hks.harvard.edu/akhuwat-fighting-poverty-with-interest-free-microfinance/
In September 2025, devastating floods across Pakistan have affected over 4.2 million people, with more than 1,000 lives lost and over 2,000 injured. Around 3 million people have been displaced in Punjab alone, where nearly 4,000 villages were submerged. The floods damaged or destroyed over one million homes, killed approximately 10,000 livestock, and left millions without shelter or basic resources. The floods also placed immense pressure on Pakistan’s already-fragile economy. Estimates indicate the catastrophe cost the country $14.9 billion in damages, $15.2 billion in economic losses, and $16.3 billion in rehabilitation and recovery expenses.
While the initial days of the flood crisis demanded urgent action, Akhuwat immediately mobilised teams to distribute Ration bags, cooked food and essential supplies to displaced families in the worst-hit regions. Akhuwat’s mission goes far beyond emergency relief. Akhuwat rebuilt over 10,000 houses which were destroyed by the floods in 2022 - thanks to Akhuwat's friends in Birmingham, Manchster, Glasgow, Wales and London.
Akhuwat believes that true compassion lies in restoring dignity and rebuilding lives. That’s why we are now fully focused on the rehabilitation phase. Rehabilitation is where Akhuwat’s support can bring transformative impact in Community Housing and Livelihood Revival.
