Description

Has South Africa’s ANC betrayed Nelson Mandela’s legacy?

In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Baleka Mbete. From living in exile under apartheid, she rose to become one of South Africa’s most powerful women, serving as Deputy President, Speaker of the National Assembly and Chair of the ANC.

Since the end of apartheid, South Africa’s economy has tripled in size and it boasts one of the continent’s most lively democracies. However, the inequality index is still one of the highest in the world, the unemployment rate is at almost 30% and critics say that many in the political class grew rich off corruption.

Following major allegations of graft levied at South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma, Baleka Mbete has been criticised by opposition groups for not using her position to hold Zuma to account and even of muzzling the opposition in Parliament.

Can President Cyril Ramaphosa now restore faith in South Africa’s democracy? Will he be able to tackle corruption? And while South Africa remains the world’s most unequal country, why have 25 years of freedom failed to bridge the divide?
