'Terrorists' or Freedom Fighters: When Should we Talk to the Enemy?
Martin McGuinness, the elected Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland and a former member of the Irish Republican Army, goes head to head with Mehdi Hasan at the Oxford Union in front of a live audience.
They discuss his role in Northern Ireland: from national liberation struggle and armed resistance to the peace process and transition to democracy, and the lessons for other conflicts.
Who determines who is or isn’t a terrorist, should the West negotiate with Hamas or the Taliban? When is it time to talk to terrorists, and why should (or shouldn’t) governments negotiate with the enemy?
This event will be televised at a later date on Al Jazeera English.
