Description

Britains housing system doesnt work.

For decades, the supply of new homes has been slowly falling away, and as a result prices are inflating. This used to be celebrated, but now we know normal people are being priced out of homes. This sucks money out of the actual economy, as more is spent on housing and debt. And none of the political parties have an answer. it's not as simple as just building more homes.

At the root of the crisis is a question we never ask: Who actually builds our homes?

In britain, almost half the houses built are made by just 10 companies. What developers build are not designed as places to live, but as property assets to sell. To a developer, all the things we value like quality, affordability, and sustainability are just costs, so of course they try and reduce them. It also means they have no incentive to solve the housing crisis, because no developer would build enough homes to make prices stop rising. We're asking them to do something they can't do.

Residents can create their own homes as apart of a community plan. The result is a neighborhood created as a beautiful resilient place to work that can grow and improve over time, rather than creating an asset to sell.

Alastair Parvin and Wikihouse show how the technology available today means we can create a completely new model of housing with open-source design and local 3D-printing of material. He will present his big idea: Creating a Citizens' Housing sector to build the homes we need, and change the housing system.
