Description

The Albert Dock lecture series seeks to celebrate the Dock as an exemplary heritage led regeneration project and acknowledge the range of built environment professionals involved in its success. The series will also look into the future and the lessons learnt from a range of comparison projects.

Speakers include:

Ben Palmer is a Director at Optimised Environments (OPEN) and has been fully involved in the design and delivery of landscape projects that provide engaging settings for public buildings, and spaces used for events, performance and programme. Ben frequently leads OPEN teams collaborating on a variety of projects including Manchester Museum, the £11m Foster + Partners Quartermile Masterplan in Edinburgh and most recently acting as the Project Director on the V&A Museum of Design Dundee Public Realm.

Ben’s presentation will reflect upon the regeneration of the Dundee Waterfront associated with the first permanent V&A collection outside of London, and provide an insight as to how the role of Landscape and Public Realm was instrumental in the wider regeneration of the waterfront. Ben will discuss some of the place-making and technical challenges they encountered as well as drawing out potential comparisons with the regeneration of the Albert Dock.

Pete Swift a Landscape Architect and Urban Designer and is a managing Partner at Planit-ie. Planit -ie are an award-winning design practice with a passion for outside spaces and the role they play as building blocks for our communities.

Pete’s talk will focus on Planit-ie’s recently ambitious masterplan for Albert Dock, revitalising the historic docklands through new public realm proposals, creating a visitor friendly gateway into the docks and improving the overall visitor experience.

Peter SiÖSstrÖm is an Associate Professor and Director of International Master Programme in Sustainable Urban Design at Lund University and a chairman of AxSUD, Axson Johnson Institute of Sustainable Urban Design. Peter’s expertise and interest lies in sustainable environments, the design of both new settlements and transformation of the existing cities. He has been a curator of several international conferences and has given a vast number of guest lectures in both Asia and Europe.

Peter will talk about holistic perspectives on sustainable urban design in Sweden and Denmark based on the international models for sustainable urban development - Western Harbour in Malmo and North Harbour in Copenhagen.

Ashwin Karjatkar is an urban designer at the city planning office in Gothenburg, Sweden, who is currently working on the largest urban development project in Scandinavia - RiverCity Gothenburg. His portfolio includes a number of projects delivered in Sweden, China, Philippines, Malaysia and India, where he co-ordinated landscape, masterplanning and architectural works from concept to on-site supervision. Ashwin works in multiple scales and with interdisciplinary teams to deliver a holistic and sensitive ideas that have an ecological basis while being human centric.

Ashwin’s presentation will explore the redevelopment of Frihammen, a former working dockland area of Gothenburg that will become a new city district and a test arena for various design alternatives including ambitious social, environmental and traffic strategies. A recipient of the planning prize (2016) in Sweden the project has also been applauded for its inclusive process of planning involving the city, diverse range of small and large developers and various city departments from the onset.
