Event Details

Alcohol Concern recently merged with Alcohol Research UK to create a major independent national charity, working to reduce the harms caused by alcohol. We offer a wide range of training for those whose work brings them into contact with people drinking at potentially harmful levels.

Alcohol and older people: identification and brief advice and appropriate care planning course

Introduction

This course will outline how workers can identify alcohol-related harm among older people and how to help these drinkers to address or manage their drinking.

Who should sign up?

The course is appropriate for staff in all services who work with older people who are at risk of alcohol-related harm.

What will it cover?

This course will cover a comprehensive approach to working with older people who drink too much. The focus is people over 65, but the course will also be of value to those working with people aged 55-65.

What will I learn?

By the end of the training course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the alcohol unit and sensible limit system and apply it to individual consumption among older people
  • Use and interpret an appropriate alcohol screening tool
  • Communicate brief advice effectively and confidently to individuals about their alcohol use
  • Improve the knowledge of individuals on the physical, social and psychological effects of alcohol in a way that supports change
  • Assess the risks associated with particular patterns of drinking and identify those older people in need of further intervention
  • Signpost to the various treatment and support options available for older heavy drinkers,
  • Identify and make appropriate referrals to local services for those experiencing problems with alcohol
  • Develop an appropriate care plan for an older drinker who is difficult to engage in treatment.
