Event description
Join us for an intimate evening ‘at home’ with the multi-million selling Alexander McCall Smith in conversation with James Naughtie.

About this Event

This will be a very special ‘at home’ event, with Alexander McCall Smith drawing on treasured personal objects from around his house to tell his story and chart his journey from professor of medical law to global publishing sensation.

Alexander is one of the world’s best-loved, and best-selling, authors: his No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series alone has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and been translated into 46 languages. In total, he has written or edited over 100 books, including volumes of poetry, short stories and books for children.

2021 sees Alexander launch five new novels - including new instalments of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, 44 Scotland Street and Detective Varg series - and to celebrate publication he will be looking back over his career with his friend, the broadcaster and journalist James Naughtie.

Alexander McCall Smith CBE was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1948. As a professor of medical law he worked in many universities in the UK and abroad, and served as Vice-Chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK; a member of the International Bioethics Commission of UNESCO; Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the British Medical Journal and Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Roslin Institute. He lives in Edinburgh and is married with two daughters.

James Naughtie, special correspondent for BBC News, is one of the country's best-known broadcasters. He presented Today on Radio 4 for 21 years, and has reported for the BBC from around the world for more than three decades. He has also hosted every edition of Radio 4’s Bookclub since it began in 1998. His most recent book is On the Road, an account of his experiences of travelling in America since the 1970s.

With thanks for your generous support for 5x15.
