Event description

Description

Alexandra Park is nestled between Moss Side and Whalley Range, areas that have reflected the high times and the low times and now the getting-back-up-there times of inner city Manchester. Completed in 1869, it was designed to serve the needs of the local middle class residents who were living off the wealth of a city at the height of its powers.

Manchester believed in parks, even for the masses in areas like Clayton or Salford but this was to be a "cut above", a park for those who would always behave well. So there was bowls and tennis and outdoor gymnasia (males and females separate for reasons of discretion of course). There was an an area to perambulate and admire the horticultural riches of Empire and half a mile of Lime avenue for horseriding; Manchester's own Rotten Row.

And there was politics. Alex Park was the destination for radical Manchester marchers from the suffragettes to Oswald Mosley's Fascists and Northern Rock Against Racism.

Now it is re-born for a new century; welcoming all it's neighbours back again, people and pets and wildlife alike.

Come for a walk in the park in a very special Queen of Parks
