Algerian Cookery Class with Amel | LONDON | Pop up
Overview
ABOUT THE CUISINE
Algerian cuisine is a beautiful blend of North African, Mediterranean, and French influences — rich in spices, seasonal vegetables, slow-cooked stews, and warm breads. From fragrant soups like Chorba Frik to comforting tagines and delicate pastries, Algerian food is deeply social, made to be shared, and full of heritage. With flavours shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, every dish tells a story of community, generosity, and home.
ABOUT THE CHEF
A message from our Chef Amel:
Hi my name is Amel, I am from Sidi Bel Abbes in Western Algeria. Our city is nicknamed ‘Petit Paris’ because there is a strong French influence. I wasn’t allowed to cook growing up because my parents wanted me to focus on my studies. I was a teacher in Algeria but wasn’t able to continue teaching when I moved to the UK in 2015. After I met my wonderful husband, we quickly had children and I began to spend more time at home. During this time, I realised my passion for cooking and baking. I cooked so much for my friends and family that they told me to stop as they feared they were getting fat. In the future, I want to open my own bakery where I can share Algerian food and culture with people in London. Algeria is extremely multicultural and culturally rich, which is something I am very proud of. I have always been a daydreamer and I really value the freedom to pursue my dreams here in the UK”.

THE CLASS FORMAT
Our cookery classes are family-style - meaning everyone works together to prepare the dishes as a team.
While you’ll be asked to choose one dish to focus on, you’ll have the opportunity to move around the kitchen, help with other dishes, and learn from each recipe. It’s a fun, social, and collaborative way to cook! At the end of the class, you’ll sit down with the chef, class facilitator and volunteers to enjoy the delicious meal you’ve created together.
