Description

Aliens: Science's Search for Extraterrestrial Life - Wednesday 21st February 2018, 6:30pm - 7:30pm

About the Lecture:
Space is big – really, REALLY big. So it seems very unlikely that our insignificant planet is the only place in the entire Universe where there is life. But let’s assume that all those silly reports of UFO landings and alien abductions are just that: silly. So how do serious scientists go about looking for extraterrestrial life? Well, there are three approaches. The first is to listen out to signals from alien civilisations. We’ve been doing this for years now and so, far there’s been silence. Or we can look through our telescopes to discover earth-like planets in other solar systems where life could exist. Finally, we can send probes to the outer reaches of the solar system and explore the moons of Saturn and Jupiter where we know the conditions might be right for life.

And then there’s Mars...

Families of all ages are welcome, but it may be of particular interest to 11 - 18 year olds who are interested in studying Physics at university.

Doors open at 6:00pm in preparation for an expected start time of 6:30pm. The lecture should finish by 7:30pm but families are welcome to stay afterwards to speak to event organisers and current University of Surrey students.

Entry is completely free of charge and refreshments will also be provided free of charge.

About the Speaker:
Jim Al-Khalili OBE is a professor of physics at the University of Surrey and an acclaimed author and TV and radio presenter. His book, Aliens: Science asks: Is there anyone out there? was published last year and has already been translated into several languages.

Getting to the Lecture:
The lecture will be taking place on the University of Surrey's Stag Hill campus. Full details will be shared via email once you have booked your space.
