Event description

Description

Our popular annual Saturday morning conference returns for 2017

Registration from 9am, with stands and exhibitors (publishers, tour operators etc.)

British Council talk: 9:30am

KEYNOTE - RACHEL HAWKES

Change is inevitable. Progress is optional.

9:40am to 10:40am

As long as education continues to be a political football, frequent, (even ill-advised!) change is guaranteed. However, it is teachers who mediate the impact of those changes, and ultimately, we who refashion change into progress. How do we best ensure that we do this for the language learners we teach? What does progress look like in the new educational landscape?

CHOICE OF TWO WORKSHOPS

11:10am to 12:10pm and 12:15pm to 1:15pm

Rachel Hawkes

Speaking at KS3 and KS4

In this workshop we explore practical ideas for developing the spoken confidence and spontaneity which the new GCSE examination requires, beginning at KS3. Teachers will leave the session positive and confident, with a better understanding of progress in speaking across KS3 and KS4. Examples will be in French, German and Spanish, but more importantly, the ideas are readily adaptable to different languages, topics, age and ability ranges.

Helen Aberdeen

Teaching literature at Key Stage 5; the welcome new challenge for ALL Post-16 teachers?

In her workshop, Helen will explore a series of key questions. What can the study of literature bring to our students? What are the exam board’s requirements in terms of the literature component? What are the best ways of tackling and working through a literary work? What are the pitfalls to avoid? Examples will be given in French and German.

Jim McElwee

Progress and Progression: what’s the difference?

In this session, we will look at progression from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5, but with particular emphasis on the new programme of study for Key Stage 3 and the new GCSE. We will look at the implications for teaching grammar, creativity and independence. The session will combine examples of work to illustrate progress and progression as well as interactive activities. Examples will be in French, Spanish and German.

Vicky Cooke

Teaching reading in KS2 – ensuring progress and developing skills

This session aims to examine the scope and purpose of reading in primary MFL using practical examples of how we can develop reading aloud & reading comprehension to show real progress over 4 years of learning. Examples given are mostly in French but where possible there will be reference to Spanish and German.

CONFERENCE CLOSES AT 1:15PM
