I-SEE Seminar -

Professor Peter R. Wilson, Professor of Electronic and Systems Engineering, University of Bath

‘All Electric Aircraft – the future of aviation’

Abstract: In the last decade there has been a significant shift in electrification of mass transportation with the expansion of electric railways, electric cars, and passenger marine transport. The most recent electrification revolution has taken place in the aviation industry with the transformation of many aircraft systems from hydraulic and other mechanical actuation systems to electrical. In commercial aircraft this has seen a profound shift from More Electric Aircraft towards All Electric Aircraft where every possible system is converted to electrical power. This has had the consequence of a need for a massive expansion of power electronics to support the array of aircraft systems. Many of these innovations have been made practically possible through the development of new wide band-gap devices in Silicon-carbide and GaN, and new power electronic systems such as power converters, inverters, motor drivers and rectifiers using these wide band-gap devices. This talk will highlight some of the key areas where power electronics are being applied to achieve these changes in modern aircraft design and where the benefits of electric aircraft systems are being realized.

Professor Peter Wilson was born and educated in Edinburgh, obtaining degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Business Administration at Heriot Watt University and Edinburgh Business School. He also holds a PhD from the University of Southampton. He started his career at Ferranti plc in Edinburgh as a design engineer working on aircraft systems for fighter aircraft including Jaguar, Tornado, and Typhoon before joining Analogy Inc in the USA. Over the last two decades he has worked on a large number of projects in the commercial aviation industry including for aircraft such as Airbus A350 and the military transport aircraft A400M, most recently as the PI on the clean sky project the advanced avionics applications simulation platform. He has published more than 100 papers, several books and is an acknowledged expert in the field of model-based engineering. He is a Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the British Computer Society, is vice-president of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and is co-chair & co-founder of the International Technology Roadmap for Wide Band-gap power Semiconductors (ITRW).

Prior discussions and afternoon tea will be served in the Wessex Restaurant, University of Bath from 16:00 to 16:25
