Join us to celebrate All That Flows Comes to Rest - a community project exploring the past, present and future of Avonmouth. In collaboration with local residents, the project set out to gather stories and images of Avonmouth; from the early development of the port to the experience of those living locally today. So far we have compiled over 4000 images, alongside postcards and other ephemera, all of which will be entered into a new community archive, to be held at Avonmouth Community Centre and Library.
The event
A selection of the gathered materials will be presented as an exhibition across the main hall of Avonmouth Community Centre. Alongside this exhibition, we will screen three new films, created as part of the project, including:
- Knowing by Heart - a collaboration between 6 women connected to Avonmouth (Cherry, Eileen, Pat, Elsie, Judith & Marilyn) and movement artist Kit Hall. Through workshops, the group created movement portraits that celebrate their memories of life and work in Avonmouth. From collating paper to mending a seam, the portraits capture the memories of everyday gestures that often go unrecorded.
- Now I Am a Boat - a collaboration between students at Shirehampton Primary School and artist Rachael Clerke. The group explored the history of trade routes, creating a playground game that maps the movements of ships across the globe.
- Dockers: The Last Shift - archival video footage created by dockers in the months leading up to 1991’s layoffs is interwoven with recently conducted interviews where those involved recall their memories of life on the docks.
All three films were made in collaboration with Black Bark Films.
Community Meal
After the screening and exhibition, all are invited to stay for a community meal to celebrate the project. The meal is free for all - please let us know your attending by booking a place via eventbrite, or by speaking to Rachael or Sammi at Avonmouth Community Centre.
