Event description

Description

A Cabaret of All Things Joyce featuring Music, Dance, Comedy and Ulyssean Surprises inspired by the life and works of James Joyce. Bethencourt Production's monthly event at Buswells is a celebration of the power of music in Joyce’s narrative, his sense of humour and his unique character and journey as an artist. Buswells Hotel, a historical landmark hotel since 1880, is the setting for this time warp of sounds of Dublin.

Bethencourt Productions dedicates the July 16th Joycean Cabaret to Lucia Joyce, James Joyce’s daughter.

Born on the month of July (1907), Lucia was fifteen when she began taking anti-balletic dance lessons, of the “aesthetic”variety. Lucia pursued a career as a modern dancer and was an accomplished illustrator & linguist. In 1929, dancing on stage at the Bal Bullier in Paris: an angular mermaid-cum-fish in a skin-tight sheath of sequins designed by herself, a critic singled her out as “subtle and barbaric.” Lucia was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age.

In testimony to her immense spirit coupled with her father’s infinite love, Master of Ceremonies, Leonor Bethencourt brings artists together to delight audiences with Music, Dance, Short Story & Comedy inspired by Lucia Joyce.

The poster design depicts James Joyce and his daughter Lucia in a copyright painting by artist John Nolan.
