AGENDA

8.30am: Reception and networking

9am-10.30am: Panel discussion and Q&A

10.30am-11am: Networking

Peace-related philanthropy, at less than 1 per cent of all grantmaking, seems irresponsibly small given that armed conflict has spoiled lives, divided societies and ruined economies. Yet philanthropy has sometimes played vital, but less well-known, roles in peace building. Reflecting on Alliance's new issue, this panel will debate the value of different approaches to the peace philanthropy field, from working with communities to partnering with the UN.

Speakers include:

  • Celia McKeon - co-founder and coordinator, Rethinking Security
  • Stephen Pittam - former Trust Secretary, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (2001-2012)
  • Rasha Sansur, communication and resource mobilisation officer, Dalia Association-Palestine
  • Barry Knight - secretary, CENTRIS (chair)

Questions include:

  • Why do so few foundations pursue peace-related work? What are some of the success stories of those who have?
  • Can the UN's Sustainable Development Goals give new impetus to peace philanthropy?
  • Is it legitimate for private foundations to work in conflict zones?
  • When should foundations seek to influence how states pursue foreign and security policy?

What will I get out of it?

  • Hear experienced practitioners dicuss their work on the frontlines of conflict resolution
  • Get a free copy of Alliance and discuss the special feature with contributors
  • Networking and refreshments with philanthropy-sector peers
  • Debate the latest issues and trends in philanthropy

Who is this for?

  • Foundation staff
  • Philanthropy and social investment professionals
  • Researchers on philanthropy, peace and conflict
  • Think tanks
  • Philanthropists
  • Specialist media
