Event description

Description

Dancer Allie Herrmann (Manchester) and guitarist Tom Metcalfe (Preston) present an evening of live flamenco at the Harris. . They will take you on an emotional journey through the major palos (styles) of flamenco, while giving a a deeper insight into the historical, cultural and musical context of this ancient Andalusian tradition, which has been awarded UNESCO ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ status.

The unusual rhythmic and harmonic structures in flamenco often evoke a sense of exotic mystery to a western ear. This is due to the multi-cultural fusion that occurred at the “end of the Old World” in the south of Spain. The primary group responsible for the development of flamenco are the Romani gypsies, originally from Rajasthan in North West India, who migrated through Persia, North Africa and across the straight of Gibraltar into Andalusia. Additionally, the Arabic and Moorish influences from North Africa have left a lasting legacy on Spain, especially in Andalusia (the southern province that takes its name from the Arabic, Al Andalus). The Sephardic Jews are an ancient and unique ethno-group, originally from the Levant, who settled in Spain centuries ago. Their synagogue chants, as well as secular folk songs, have also have been said to influence the development of flamenco. Additionally, there are a plethora of other cultural influences in Spain, including Roman, Byzantine, Greek, Visigothic and Celtic, to name a few.
