About this course
Alpha is a short course designed to help ordinary people explore their thoughts on some of the big questions of life in a friendly, relaxed and informal setting. It will run over 9 weeks on Wednesday evenings from 19:30pm - 21:15pm begining on the 11th January 2017 and it is completely FREE.
Format
The evening begins with coffee and dessert on the basis that “Life is short - eat dessert first!”
The theme for the evening is presented in a short film, designed to explore what the Christian faith has to say on one of the big questions of life and to encourage conversation. There is no expectation that those attending will be share the views being expressed! (In fact it would be a pretty dull evening if they do!)
Probably the most important part of any Alpha evening is the chance to share your thoughts and ideas on the night's topic, and then discuss it around a table. There's no obligation to say anything and there's nothing you can't say (seriously!) It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.
We hope that through discussion and dialogue the evenings will be thoroughly enjoyable and mutually enriching - even if at the end of it we all agree to disagree!
If at any point you think this Alpha course isn’t for you, that’s no problem - There’s no pressure, no follow up and no charge.
Who is Living Lordswood?
Living Lordswood is active in the Lordswood area of Southampton. Led by Pete and Judy Short & Ian and Suzy Williamson we organise a number of community projects designed to bring joy and hope to the local community - including a community choir and monthly litter-picks. We love the idea of exploring the big questions of life with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
What's the story
Over 29 million people have tried Alpha in 169 countries, and it's been translated into 112 different languages.Developed as a short course at HTB London, in 1990 Nicky Gumbel took over running Alpha and found that many people outside of the church wanted to explore the Christian faith. Alpha now runs in community groups like Living Lordswood and also workplaces, prisons - and a whole bunch of churches including the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and all mainline Protestant denominations.
