Event description
Alternative pottery retreat in the heart of gorgeous Northumberland. Learn to handbuild, throw, trim, glaze and fire your own pots.

About this Event

We are excited to launch our brand new 5 day UK pottery retreat set in stunning landscape in the heart of the Northumberland national park.

Muddy Fingers have been running classes and workshops for over 15 years in the North east and beyond.

We (Marv and Diane) are both full time professional potters and as well as teaching ceramics we also make tableware for top restaurants and chefs such as Tom Kerridge and Burberry.

Raku and alternative firings have grown to be one of our favourite things to do and teach. With such a variety of glazes and finishes, you will never get one pot the same as the next. That’s what’s so good about it!

Wether you’re an experienced potter or have never touched clay in your life this course is suitable for everyone. Ages 16 plus only please.

The course timings are 10-1 then 2-5 for each of the 5 days. We will provide a simple shared lunch suitable for vegetarians and wheat free.

On the last day we will organise a firing of the pizza oven and everyone is welcome to take part in that too.

The course is flexible and we may slightly change the techniques and firings but we are planning on the following:

Day one: an hours individual tuition on the potters wheel keeping 2-3 of your best pots.

Handbuilding techniques including slab work and pinch pots to make another 2-3 pots.

Burnishing techniques for some of your pots to use in the horse hair firing.

Day two: finishing up your pots from the previous day, trimming on the wheel and some simple slip decorations.

Day three: terra sig techniques and horse hair firing using pre made bisque fired pots.

We will also bisque fire the previous days pots.

Day four: raku glazing tests and techniques, saggar firing on pre made bisque pots.

Day five: pit firing, raku firing of the pots you’ve made on the course.

The price of £180 includes all materials, tuition, firing and light lunches.

Pizza night is an extra £5 per person Payable on the first day.

Accommodation can be booked through the fabulous people at Wild Northumbrian.
