Join us on 8 November 2025 at Hoxton Hall for Alternative Roots: a day-long festival curated by Ming Strike, the performance and podcast maker working in between languages, borders and genres.
Supported by Kakilang, the festival takes over Hoxton Hall for a full day of performance, film, workshops, food, and conversation. Over ten live works by East and Southeast Asian artists, from intimate actions to staged spectacles, will unfold across the Main Hall, Palmer Room, and other unexpected spaces.
Alongside performances, audiences can explore a marketplace of zines, food, and art objects, join participatory workshops, encounter artist films, and be part of the Ming Strike live podcast, a space for artists to share how they negotiate and reimagine questions of heritage and roots in their practice.
Alternative Roots creates space for risk-taking works that don’t fit neatly into existing categories, reflecting the hybridity within our ESEA community. A festival pass gives audiences freedom to come and go throughout the day, move between rooms and encounters, discover unexpected connections and alternative routes to community.
