This 1 day course introduces you to the process of casting aluminium using a sand mould. You will be guided through each step in preparing the pattern, sifting and ramming up the sand and creating the sprue and vents ready for pouring. We will then fire up the foundry to melt aluminium at over 600ºC. Each student will pour their own molten metal from the glowing crucible using specialist lifting gear. Once cooled, the sand moulds will be opened to reveal the finished items ready for cleaning and polishing. At the end of the course you will be able to take home the original pattern prototype as well as the finished cast aluminium copy. There will be the choice between casting a coaster or a name plaque.
This course will be led by Patrick King who originally trained in London as multi-disciplinary designer. His work combines digital and analogue tools to design and produce objects ranging in scale from furniture to temporary and permanent architecture.
Please remember to wear sturdy boots, long sleeves and trousers on the day. Refunds and/or changes to ticket are available up to 7 days before course start date.
