Event description

Description

On the evening of Monday 21st October, the School of Law has the pleasure of welcoming back 1996 alumnus Kama Melly QC and 2009 alumnus Sophie Mitchell.

From 6.00pm, Kama and Sophie will speak for approximately 15 minutes each about their career journey to date, before the floor is then opened to questions. Following the Q&A, guests will be invited to chat informally and network over drinks.

From 7.45pm, a group of students will attend a dinner with our alumni visitors and Head of School, Professor Alastair Mullis, at University House. To apply to attend the dinner please fill in the relevant section of this booking form detailing why you are particularly interested in becoming a Barrister, by Wednesday 9th October. If the number of dinner applicants exceeds the total number of places available guests will be selected at random.

Kama Melly QC is widely recognised as one of the foremost female advocates in the North East, known for her technical ability and as a powerful advocate. She is in constant demand from both the defence and the prosecution, receiving an increasing number of private instructions. She has a reputation for achieving positive results in cases which others have assessed as hopeless.

Sophie Mitchell is a barrister at St. Pauls Chamber in Leeds. Sophie has gained a reputation for being the Northern go-to defamation junior. She regularly acts for high profile individuals, companies and the press. As Treasury Counsel, Sophie regularly acts for the Government in sensitive privacy matters. She often represents the police. She had sole conduct of one of the only defamation trials by jury at Leeds High Court.
