Event description
Join Proper Job for an online talk with award-winning environmentalist Nicola Peel. Via Zoom on Saturday 29th January, 2.30-4pm.

About this event

Nicola Peel is an award-winning environmentalist, who speaks passionately about the lessons she has learned from her 20 years working in the Ecuadorian Amazon and her deep connection to the natural world. Combining inspiring stories and practical solutions, Nicola provides a vision of how we can live in harmony with Nature.

Nicola will be talking about some of the work she has initiated and coordinated in the Ecuadorian Amazon over the past 20 years. From living deep in the jungle and traveling down the Amazon river to the impacts she discovered of the oil industry on the people and environment. These projects include building hundreds of family’s rainwater systems so they may drink clean water, bringing scientists together to study how fungi can clean up oil spills, initiating the agroforestry project to prevent deforestation and building benches and buildings from eco-bricks (plastic bottles filled with rubbish) to clean up villages suffering from plastic pollution.

Being locked down in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, The Los Cedros Reserve in Ecuador, Nicola dedicated a year to the precedent-setting Rights of Nature legal campaign to protect it. Speaking at the Constitutional Court of Ecuador and coordinating a team of economists, she spoke about the valuation of the forest using today’s carbon market.

Nicola is currently a trustee for Rainforest Saver, Contributor with Rebalance Earth, and Creative Director for Sussex Green Living. She is the co-founder of the South East Climate Alliance, a coalition of over 100 environmental, social and faith based groups working on climate solutions, and a full time campaigner advising various organizations.

Nicola has given key note speeches to entire schools such as the prestigious Christs Hospital and Bedales, spoken for the COP26 Nature team at BEIS (The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) and sat on numerous panels including the Wellcome Trust and Glastonbury Festival.

Suggested donation £5-£10, pay what you can afford.

Organiser Proper Job

Organiser of 'Amazon Adventures and a Solutionists Work'

Launched in 1995, Proper Job is one of the UK’s first community reuse centres nestled on the northeast edge of Dartmoor in Devon. We are a Charity that aims to keep reusable items away from landfills, by putting them on sale in an Aladdin’s cave of pre-loved treasures.

Everything from baths, crockery and clothes to garden furniture and building materials can be bought by you at a fraction of their original cost, meaning you not only save money but also go some way to leading a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

We are fiercely committed to principles of sustainability and educating to conserve resources. Our mission is to develop more UK initiatives around conservation, waste management and recycling of the earth’s resources. You are invited to join training sessions and skill sharing workshops. We offer those to promote the benefits of reusing, recycling and reducing in this modern age.

The objectives of the Proper Job Resource Centre are the protection and preservation of the environment by the promotion of waste reduction, re-use and recycling and advancing education of the general public about all aspects of waste generation, waste management and waste recycling.
