About this event

Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and the Scottish Alcohol Research Network (SARN) invite you to join us online on Wednesday 19 June from 12.45-14.00 BST (UK time) for our fourth SHAAP/SARN Alcohol Occasionals event of 2024.

Alcohol places a significant burden on UK ambulance services, with at least one-in-six ambulance call-outs in Scotland being alcohol-related. Ambulance staff in England have reported feeling inadequately prepared for alcohol-related call-outs in surveys, however no previous research has explored their views in-depth. We aimed to understand the perspectives of ambulance clinicians in Scotland on how they learn to handle the diverse needs of patients in alcohol-related call-outs.

This seminar will explore findings from in-depth telephone interviews conducted with 27 ambulance clinicians working in frontline practice for the Scottish Ambulance Service and four people in senior management positions.

Dr Danielle Mitchell is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Marketing and Health with expertise in qualitative research. Recently, her work has focused on exploring the impact of alcohol and drugs on the ambulance service in Scotland, person-centred approaches to alcohol treatment in deprived areas in Scotland and young people’s views and awareness of the marketing of tobacco, e-cigarettes and emerging nicotine products in the UK.

The webinar will be hosted online using Zoom, and registrants will receive a link to join.

This event is for public health professionals, researchers, healthcare workers, civil servants, NGOs, health agencies etc. If you or your organisation receives funding from the alcohol industry (alcohol producers, retailers, trade associations, Social Aspect Public Relations Organisations (SAPROs), & Business-Interest NGOs) please do not attend.
