This 2-hour interactive, face-to-face workshop will explore a variety of protected characteristics and their impact on our lives. The first part of the workshop is an exercise called "privilege race" which is designed to ilustrate how our differnt identities and characteristics can andantage or disadantage us in everyday life. The second part is a reflective discussion.

LUNCH will be provided. Please make sure you arrive on time.


This workshop is a part of the Academic Multicultural and Diversity Programme (AMDP) which is a new initiative especially designed for Kingston University Students. Run by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, the programme will equip you with essential skills that will help make the most of your time at university as well as boost your CV. In addition, by taking part, you can collect Kingston Award points.

You will:

  • Enhance your understanding of how culture and experiences shape your perceptions
  • Improve your knowledge of world views
  • Develop critical thinking around diversity issues

The programme comprises 4 parts:

  1. EDI: Rough guide for Students - an online introduction to equality, diversity and inclusion, including thought-provoking videos
  2. In curriculum workshops - interactive activities as part of your curriculum
  3. Change project - paid opportunities to design and execute projects to improve the lives of students
  4. Experience workshops - they will allow student to experience and reflect on everyday challenges that students with protected characteristics face

What’s in it for me/what will I gain?

You will gain skills highly sought after by employers: structured thinking, development of word views, diverse perspectives for problem solving and communication with a range of audiences.

Completing at least one of the extra-curricular elements of AMDP (the online resource, change project or the experience workshops) will make you eligible to get 5 points towards your Kingston Award.
