Participation in Practice Masterclass Day

Level 1: Foundations of Practice

Who is this course for?

This masterclass day is aimed at organisations and professionals working anywhere in the young people’s mental health system- from universal and primary care services to specialist mental health services- who want to develop or assure their organisation’s mental health participation strategy.

It will be especially helpful for:

  • Individuals working in mental health services with a responsibility for participation
  • Individuals working in other organisations providing support to young people including children’s services, youth justice services, primary care, targeted youth services working with vulnerable groups who want to better understand how they can plan and promote young people’s involvement around mental health in their organisation
  • Organisations with reach across a local system like clinical networks and CCGs who want to develop a strategy for young people’s participation in relation to mental health across the area.

Developing your organisations participation strategy

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the case for and key elements of a young people’s mental health participation strategy and map the range of decisions and activities related to mental health that take place within your organisation
  • Apply a simple process for co-producing a mental health participation strategy with young people, workers and organisational leaders
  • Identify enablers (including staff and youth skills) that need to be built into your strategy and possible barriers to implementation
  • Describe some approaches to measuring the impact of your participation strategy
  • Set out a case for your strategy to colleagues and leaders
  • Access a range of resources to support you in developing participation within your organisation

Afternoon session: Involving young people and parents/carers in governance and leadership: models in practice

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe a range of models of involving young people and/or parents/carers in governance and appraise their suitability for your organisation
  • Set out a case for how engaging young people and/or parents/carers in governance would be of benefit to your organisation, to staff and to participants themselves
  • Map the different types of young people and/or parents/carers it would be beneficial to engage in your governance
  • Describe some of the concerns professionals have around involving young people and/or parents/carers in governance and explore ways to address these with colleagues and senior leaders
  • Use a range of activities to involve young people and parents/carers in governance meetings with professionals
  • Outline an evaluation approach to demonstrate the impact and influence of young people and/or parents/carers on your organisation’s governance
