Widening Involvement Masterclass Day

Level 1: Foundations of Practice

Who is this course for?

This masterclass is aimed at organisations and professionals working anywhere in the young people’s mental health system - from universal and primary care services to specialist mental health services - who want to engage young people in their work who may have extra vulnerabilities.

It will be especially helpful for:

  • Individuals working in mental health services with a responsibility for participation
  • Individuals working in other organisations providing support to young people including children’s services, youth justice services, primary care, targeted youth services working with vulnerable groups who want to better understand how they can increase the engagement of young people with extra vulnerabilities.

Morning Session: Introduction to supporting the engagement of young people with extra vulnerabilities

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by young people with extra vulnerabilities, and how these vulnerabilities can affect their access to support, information and participation activities.
  • Describe good practice approaches to engaging young people with extra vulnerabilities.
  • Audit your organisations’ engagement of young people with extra vulnerabilities and identity future development areas
  • Identify barriers, enablers and opportunities for engaging young people with extra vulnerabilities in your organisation
  • Access resources to help continue your development and practice in this area

Afternoon session: Supporting the safe and meaningful participation of young people experiencing mental illness

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe some of the additional considerations that need to be taken into account when planning participation with young people in the context of mental health
  • Identify common risks around engaging groups of young people experiencing mental illness in participation activities and outline some of the ways other organisations mitigate such risks and realise the benefits of participation for young people
  • Describe some of key processes that can support safe participation
  • Outline a process for engaging young people in collaborative support planning around their participation
  • Outline different levels and types of participation that can enable young people to engage at different stages of recovery

Note: this session is for non-clinical professionals who want to learn about planning safe participation, it doesn’t cover the involvement of young people receiving treatment in shared decision making.
