About this event

Ian Linden is a member of the AMPS committee and will present a review of LTA

The lifetime allowance (LTA) was introduced with effect from 6 April 2006. Its purpose is to limit the tax-privileged authorised benefits that can be drawn from a registered pension scheme. Initially set at a level of £1.5m, it was gradually increased to £1.8m, with the intention to increase this further in future. However, it was frozen at £1.8m from 2010/11 tax year, before being reduced by subsequent governments.

With its introduction and the subsequent reductions, there has been the opportunity for individuals to protect their lifetime allowance at the various levels. Each form of LTA protection comes with its own idiosyncrasies and it is essential to understand these variations.

In this session Ian will provide a broad overview of the LTA, with the session considering:

• The purpose of the LTA

• How the taking of benefits is measured against an individual’s LTA

• The various forms of LTA protection that have been available
