Event description

Description

The 2018 Ampthill Literary Festival, under the auspices of The Ampthill Festival will take place on: Saturday 28th April in Parkside Hall, Ampthill

The event opens with two children’s events

For the middle school children, author of The Boy in the Tower, Polly Ho Yen, nominated for the Blue Peter Book Award, the Waterstone’s Best Fiction Award and for the Children’s Book Award, will workshop from 10.30-11.30 with our young aspiring writers.

Don’t worry we have not forgotten the younger readers. A fringe event for children aged 3-8 years old is taking place in Ampthill Library from 9.00-10.00 when Four Little Hens author, Heather Trefusis, will entertain the children with stories about her four rescue hens. The event will be limited to 30 places so please get your tickets before they sell out.

After the children’s events the winners of our writing competition will be announced. Prizes will be awarded across the age categories by our special guests Polly Ho Yen and Ruth Hogan. For more information about the writing competition please keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages (links below).

To open our afternoon session we have a music extravaganza with Classic FM DJs John Suchet and Tim Lihoreau. This expert panel will be discussing their musically inspired books, chaired by local musician and musicologist, Rob Baker.

HThe afternoon continues with Secklow FM DJ and supporter of the Arts, Nancy Stevens interviewing New York Times best seller, Rowan Coleman and local author Ruth Hogan. Ruth’s debut novel The Keeper of Lost Things has been a whirlwind success since its appearance on the Richard and Judy Book Club.

The celebration of Bedfordshire authors continues into the late afternoon with Peter Laws, Church Minister and horror fanatic, who has recently published the second novel in the Matt Hunter series, soon to be followed by a third. Peter has also written a non-fiction novel investigating the reasons ‘we love monsters, ghosts, death and gore’, aptly titled, The Frighteners.

The Rev Peter Laws will be followed by Luton born Safraz Manzoor. Sarfraz is a journalist, broadcaster and documentary film maker and he will be sharing his experiences of writing for The Guardian, his documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and the 2007 publication of his memoir “Greetings from Bury Park”.

The day will conclude with Joanne Harris and her #Storytime band. This musical story telling show combines original music, songs and stories as part of an exploration of different forms of narrative. Joanne’s unique entertainment is sure to amuse and uplift.

Vintage B will be returning to Litfest by popular demand. They will be on site throughout the day with their delicious home-made cakes and cordials, and there will be prosecco, wine and beer to enjoy between events. Waterstones will be on site for your book purchasing needs and all our authors will be signing books after their appearances.
