An 18th Century City stroll

The Old Steine means ‘old stones’ and perhaps this was an area of ancient sacrificial but who knows? However in the 18th Century Brighton became a very popular watering place for those wanting to improve their health, and in competition with Bath for high society visitors. The Prince of Wales’ mistress lived here as did other famous 18th Century characters, and they built their elegant houses facing the Old Steine fountain and gardens. Further into the old town where fishermen grew hemp we wander around Batholemews an area where Monks were buried. This is a tour of architecture and stories.
