About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

An Almost Impossible Thing tells the stories of early female professional gardeners. Hear about a group of pioneers who battled mockery and prejudice to change ideas of what women gardeners could do.

Author Fiona Davison follows six women gardeners in the years before the First World War. She explores their lives in the context of Empire and the fight for women's right to vote.

Although gardens are often seen as a refuge, this book reminds us of a time when convention-busting women were quietly changing the world.
