An Evening of Classical Music with World-Renowned Cellist: Rohan De Saram & Rising Opera Star, Johan De Silva
Monday, 6 March 2017 from 18:30 to 21:00 (GMT)
The Friends of Sri Lanka Association is hosting an exclusive evening of classical music at the stunning Great Hall at the City of London School. We are delighted to have a truly unique line-up of performers including the world-famous cellist, Rohan De Saram.
Baritone, Johan de Silva, will sing for us. Johan has formerly sung principal roles at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera. Notable roles include Third Boy (The Magic Flute, ENO – 2007 and 2009), as well as Shepherd Boy (Tosca, ROH, 2009). Johan will be accompanied on the piano by Paul Harrison.
Pianist, Paul Harrison, is the Director of Music at the City of London School, and has held this position since September 2006, when Johan first started at the school. Paul is a highly accomplished pianist, organist and conductor, and has accompanied Johan on several occasions.
Cellist, Rohan De Saram, has performed with major orchestras all over the world. Several composers (including the late Henri Pousser) have written music especially for Rohan. The German press have describe Rohan as "one of the greatest cellists of our time." In 2005, Rohan received the 'Deshamanya,' a title of national honor awarded by the President of Sri Lanka. We are delighted to announce that especially for the Friends of Sri Lanka, Rohan's son, Suren, will join him on stage for part of the performance.
Suren De Saram is the drummer with the well-known British indie-rock band, the Bombay Bicycle Club. Suren is also a timpanist/percussionist with the recently formed Oberon Symphony Orchestra. In recitals with his father, Suren performs improvisations based on the drum rhythms of Sri Lanka.
This is a rare opportunity to host such an exclusive event and we hope many members will attend.
