After ten years of playing in various ensembles together, violinist/vocalist Nico Beedle and pianist John-Paul Muir come together for an evening of their favourite jazz standards and original compositions in an intimate duo style that draws on influences from Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Irene Kral, and Alan Broadbent.
Nico Beedle studied violin with Sheila Nelson and jazz technique and harmony with Fergus Read, and since 2003 has performed with various ensembles and singers on the UK jazz scene. Nico was a co-founder of the Hampstead Jazz Club in 2013, where he performed for 5 years both as a violinist and vocalist with many leading acts including Emilia Martensson, Alice Zawadzki, Kate Mullins, Emma Smith, Georgia Mancio and Will Bartlett, with a number of gigs featured in the London Jazz Festival. In recent years, as well as continuing to sing and play jazz, Nico has returned to his musical roots for a number of classical duo concerts on violin, performing Franck's violin sonata, Brahms' 1st violin sonata and a number of Beethoven sonatas.
John-Paul Muir has established himself as one of the finest pianists to emerge from New Zealand in recent years, and certainly one of the most versatile; equally at home in both classical, jazz, and contemporary genres. In 2010 John-Paul moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Senior Professor Joan Havill. He has since graduated with distinction from their Artist Masters Programme and is currently enjoying a freelance career based in London. John-Paul is the Senior Programme Manager of the Bloomsbury Festival, an annual 10 day arts festival held in October featuring over one hundred events across Bloomsbury. He has established a weekly jazz night in Bloomsbury at Goodenough College, where his regular appearances feature an ever-evolving roster of guest musicians from the UK jazz scene and beyond. His debut solo piano record featuring original compositions and improvisations, the Cornerstone Suite, was released in November 2019 after a premiere at the London Jazz Festival, and his latest recording project is due for release later in 2022.
