Event description
An evening of magical opera presented by Orlando Jopling on behalf of Studio Music

About this event

The evening's music.

Orlando Jopling has chosen a well-matched selection of scenes, arias and ensembles from a range of operas by Handel, Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and more, to make a structured evening. Some will be well-known, and there’ll also be a few surprises thrown in. The scenes will be informally staged for your delight by film director Ben Morris, and introduced by the singers themselves, with a preview of the scene and plot to bring you into the story of each opera.

Please don your finest, come early to enjoy a glass of English sparkling wine, and bring a picnic to enjoy during the 45 minute interval! It is utterly wonderful to have live opera back enriching our lives again; we’re in for a real treat!

The performers.

What will set this magical evening evening apart is the sheer quality of the performers.

The four singers are Jenny Stafford, Martha Jones, Richard Dowling and Alistair Ollerenshaw. These super-talented young singers have been especially chosen for their exceptional voices, technique, charisma and musicality, and their ability to connect with and delight an audience.

The orchestra is comprised of some of the most eminent chamber musicians in the country. All the performers would normally be appearing in international opera houses or concert halls. We have taken this opportunity, before the large-scale music world gets back up and running, to tempt them to perform to you in this magical woodland setting.

About Orlando Jopling.

Orlando co-founded two opera companies - Tête à Tête and Stanley Hall Opera, and has spent most of his working life in opera and ballet, at the Royal Opera House in London, Garsington Opera, Scottish Opera, the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and many others. He also programmes the Roman River Festival, which takes place every year on the Essex / Suffolk borders.

About Thorington Theatre.

Thorington Theatre is a new outside theatre space being built in the beautiful Suffolk woodlands; the theatre is built in a natural amphitheatre - a bomb crater from WWII. It is being constructed in the most sustainable way possible: the timber has been sourced from Thorington's woods by sensitively coppicing some chestnut trees.

Come and enjoy Mother Nature, a fantastic performance, and a picnic in the woods! Local refreshments are available, and for more information please visits the FAQ's on our website here: https://www.thoringtontheatre.co.uk/

We are a brand new outdoor woodland theatre on the Suffolk coast. Thorington Theatre is built in a natural amphitheatre in the woods - a bomb crater from WWII. It has been constructed in the most sustainable way possible: the timber has been sourced from Thorington's woods by sensitively coppicing some chestnut trees. Throughout Summer 2021 Thorington Theatre will host a brilliant variety of plays - from operas to family favourites, and from stand-up comedy to Shakespearian classics.

Come and enjoy Mother Nature, a fantastic play, and a picnic in the woods! Local refreshments are available from our theatre bar; for more information please see the FAQ's section on our website.
