Event description

Description

Join us on Wednesday 6th March for an evening of tech talks at our Newcastle office when some of our consultants will share their thoughts on current technology trends, how we've adopted them as a business, and they'll give some insights into the solutions that we've provided for clients. The talks will cover Technical Architecture, Software Testing, and Software Development.

Doors will be open at 6pm with a chance to grab a drink and some pizza before the talks begin at 6:30pm. Before and after the talks there will be an opportunity to network, meet some of the Scott Logic team and discuss all things tech.

Complex problems are melting my brain

Stuart Roebuck

Technology seems to get more and more complicated, year on year: but does it really? There are so many things that we can do today which would have been practically impossible just a few years ago. So, are we actually making technology simpler?

As technologists, these questions are important as we try to design systems that are easy to use, the work effectively and can be maintained. They prompt us to think about the ways we make sense of complexity and may help us to spot some of the assumptions that are making along the way. Could there be ways of working that would prevent us from becoming overwhelmed with the endless stream of new things?

In this talk, Stuart will consider whether our ways of dealing with complex technology risk distorting the very way that we think.

Stuart is a Technical Architect at Scott Logic with an interest in far too many things for his own good. Much of his recent work has been focused around helping clients to progressively transition legacy backend technology stacks to microservice architectures. His current programming language of choice is Rust.

What's quality got to do with IT? (What's quality but a second hand consideration?)

Elizabeth Fiennes

Anyone working in software development has heard about quality. Maybe they have read about the quality dynamic or heard a company’s intent to “inject a quality mindset” into their delivery.

What does this mean in plain English? What are the esoteric characteristics of quality? How do you inject quality into lean agile ways of working? How do you know when you are doing enough and who is responsible for it?

In this talk, Elizabeth will address all those questions and come up with some pragmatic ways of explaining what quality is and how to get some of that good stuff into your systems and software delivery.

Elizabeth is a Lead Test Engineer at Scott Logic, and has worked in testing and QA since 1998; with some time off for two people shaped development projects of her own. Doing talks and writing blogs are a way out of her comfort zone, which is why she has challenged herself to do more of both this year, and to share her extensive testing knowledge with others.
